How to Make Homemade Hand Sanitizer

Hand Sanitizer, clean hands

It’s very important to keep your hands clean at all times, especially now. Due to high demand it’s been harder and harder to get our daily hand cleaning essentials like hand soap and hand sanitizer. You go to the cleaning aisle at your local store and nothing. You’re not alone.

The CDC suggests if you want to avoid transmitting germs and viruses, “The best way to do that is to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and avoid touching your face.”

But, what happens when you’re traveling and don’t have access to water and soap? It’s simple, make your own. A&C Urgent Care is going to provide you a breakdown on how to make hand sanitizer and more information revealing the truth of this simple product.

What ingredients do we need?

Only a few ingredients are needed to make homemade hand sanitizer:

  • Isopropyl alcohol (minimum 60% but the stronger the better!)
  • Aloe vera gel

You can also make additions like an essential oil (lavender, tea tree) to add more disinfectant properties or simply just for a scent.

How to make your own hand sanitizer?

  • 2/3 cup 99% rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol)
  • 1/3 cup pure aloe vera gel (preferably without additives)
  • *Optional if you wish to add an essential oil add 4 drops

  • Pour all ingredients into a bowl, ideally one with a pouring spout like a glass measuring container.
  • Mix with a spoon and then beat with a whisk to turn the sanitizer into a gel.
  • Pour the ingredients into an empty bottle for easy use, and label it “hand sanitizer.”

How to use hand sanitizer

Dispense hand sanitizer onto hands and rub until dry. If hands are sticky or oily wash under water before applying hand sanitizer.

What germs does it kill?

Keep in mind washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water is ALWAYS better. An alcohol based hand sanitizer that meets the volume requirement of at least 60% can quickly reduce the number of microbes on your hands. A microbe is a microorganism, especially a bacterium causing disease or fermentation. It can destroy the Coronavirus, but it is important to keep in mind that even the most effective hand sanitizer does not kill all germs.

Hand Sanitizer is not perfect but it is effective
